My Sonnet

I had to write a sonnet for my Creative Writing Class~!
I wrote a Petrarchan sonnet. Sonnets need to have 14 lines, and 10 syllables in each line, and they have to follow an iambic pentameter (rhythm pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, U=unstressed, /=stressed, and iamb is U/, and anapest is UU/, an iambic pentameter consists of 5 iambs, U/U/U/U/U/) .
The rhyme scheme for a petrarchan sonnet is abba abba cdcdcd or cdecde. The petrachan sonnet (or italian sonnet) consists of an octave (group of 8 lines) and a sestet (group of 6 lines). The octave must either tell a small story, ask a question or pose a problem, then the sestet comments on the story, or answers the question or solves the problem.
The shakesperean sonnet (or english sonnet) has a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg and consists of 3 quatrains (group of 4 lines) and one ending couplet (group of 2 lines). The quatrains must each describe a different aspect of a subject and the couplet sums up the poem.
And that was your English Lesson for the day ;)

Here's my sonnet :)
No Broken Heart

Tell me, how far have you traveled young one?

Desperately searching for your true love,

only to have him fly off like a dove.

Tell me now, how much farther will you run?

Will you chase after him 'till you are dun,

with hope that it is you he will belove?

I pray for you, to the angels above,

that parts of a broken heart, you'll have none.

But to tell you truth, that matters not, friend.

For if a fool thinks of harming your heart,

I will make him pay, 'till the very end.

By no man will your heart be torn apart,

'less he wishes for broken bones to mend.

He who harms you, 'll be my dead work of art.

Mary

A little story/poem I wrote sometime before Halloween. It's a bit creepy so be warned.

Mary

It was a warm summer day, and the birds were singing.

Just an ordinary June day.

Mary was returning from a joyous day at the zoo

“Hello!” Mary called out. “I'm home!”

Complete silence was the only thing to greet her.

Concerned, she began to search for her family.

She searched all of the first floor,

but not a soul she found.

“How strange! How very odd this is!” she thought.

To continue her search Mary ventured upstairs.

The first room's door was wide open.

But the room was empty of life.

The second room was just the same.

Mary approached the third room,

now starting to get frightened.

This door was shut closed.

Slowly she opened the door.

It creaked and squeaked as it opened.

The room was pitch dark,

though outside it was a bright shinning day.

The curtains were drawn, and let in

only a thin sliver of sunlight.

Mary stepped into the room, and nearly slipped.

A strange dark liquid was spilled on the floor.

Mary bent down and dipped her finger in the liquid.

It was thick, and its scent was strong and metallic.

Mary put her finger towards the sunlight.

The liquid was a vivid red.

Her heartbeat quickened, and Mary stepped back.

She groped the wall for the light switch.

She turned on the light and her heart skipped a beat.

Lying on the floor in a bloody heap

were her family and neighbors.

Mary's eyes widened in horror.

Her hand gripped her chest.

Her heart flew into a panic.

Mary took a step back,

wishing to escape the terror

that was right in front of her

She felt an odd presence behind her.

It breathed a warm putrid breath onto her neck.

Mary turned and jumped away.

A white clothed figure stood in the doorway.

Breathing heavily, the figure stepped closer,

and closer, and closer to Mary.

Mary thought she heard the figure murmur her name

between each of its breaths.

“Mary...Mary...Mary...little little Mary”

she heard the figure whisper.

Mary backed away frantically,

distancing herself from the figure.

“Mary...Mary...Where's your lamb? Where's your little little lamb?”

the figure moaned.

The hairs on Mary's neck stood up.

Mary continued to back up,

and then she hit the wall.

Cornered, Mary whimpered and slid to the ground.

She curled into a ball and hid her face.

The figure calmly put its hand under her chin,

and lifted her back up.

The figure forced Mary took look into it's empty gray eyes.

Then it grinned a fiendish grin.

It exposed its sharp white teeth,

and laughed.

Mary shuddered, the figure's laughter

caused her bones to freeze and crack.

The figure revealed a dagger from behind it's back.

It lifted the dagger in to the air,

and then it plunged the dagger into Mary's heart.

Mary's screams echoed through the home,

and then stopped abruptly.

The white figure then threw Mary's lifeless body

to the ground, and walked away.

As the figure left, it silently sang to itself.

“Mary had a little lamb,

little lamb, little lamb,

Mary had a little lamb,

whose fleece was white as snow.

And everywhere that Mary went,

Mary went, Mary went,

and everywhere that Mary went,

the lamb was sure to go.”

“But Mary tired of the lamb,

of the lamb, of the lamb.

But Mary tired of the lamb,

and she declared ' No more!'

She took it to a forest,

forest, forest.

She took it to a forest and left it there alone.”

“And though the lamb, she cried,

and cried, and cried.

And though the lamb, she cried,

Mary looked not back.

Mary left the little lamb,

the little lamb, the little lamb.

Mary left the little lamb,

and never did look back.”

“A vicious wolf, he found the lamb,

he found the lamb, he found the lamb.

A vicious wolf, he found the lamb

and the lamb was white no more.

Mary lived her little life,

her little life, her little life.

Mary lived her little life

happy forever more!”

“She never saw the lamb again,

lamb again, lamb again.

She never saw the lamb again,

until one fateful day.

The lamb's spirit returned,

returned, returned.

The lamb's spirit returned

wreaked its deserved revenge.”

Limericks

My creative writing homework for the weekend was to write limericks.Which meant I had to make rhymes. I do not like rhyming. Not one bit. But despite that, I ended up writing 2 limericks!! After I wrote the first one I ended up talking in rhymes for about five minutes! XD

Here's the first one:

There once was a girl with luscious curls.
Her hair caused envy in all the girls.
So in an act of scoff,
They cut it all off,
And left her with nothing but some whorls.

(whorls are strands of hair)

Here's the second one, these were my thoughts after I wrote the first one, I kid you not!

So I just wrote that damn limerick.
Now will someone please give me the heimlich.
I can barely breath,
For I cannot believe,
That I just wrote one more limerick!

Haikus and Tankas

Ok, so for my Creative writing homework I had to write a haiku (a traditional Japanese poem with 3 lines with the syllable sequence of 5-7-5) and then a tanka (a variation of the haiku but with 5 lines and the syllable sequence is 5-7-5-7-7) that responds to the haiku, then a haiku that responds to that tanka and so on. We had to do 3 of each. The idea is that there are two people having a conversation or writing notes to each other, but they were doing so in poem form. Since you know EVERYONE talks in the form of a haiku and/or tanka. *rolls eyes*

Well, anyways, these were the 6 poems I wrote. The two people are arguing about wheter cats or wolves are better. (<- an inside joke between my bff Jen and me. She's a wolf and I'm a cat) They were rather fun to write!

The clever kitten pounces
her prey is captured swiftly.
The fiercest creature.

The wise wolf awaits,
 he listens patiently
 for his prize to falter.
The wolf sweeps in for the kill.
 He is the fiercest creature.

Soft fur, and bright eyes.
A graceful elegant form.
 A beast of beauty.

The cunning shadow,
of the wolf in the full moon.
His sleek, fearsome
figure inspires awe in all.
He is the most beautiful.

A friendly feline
purrs comforting harmonies.
 The kindest critter.

 The wolf, he is a
loyal companion, he will
 never leave a friend.
Faithful to the very end.
He is the kindest critter.
